As a growing business, every moment matters. In a previous piece titled ‘Online presence as a business booster‘, I explained some of the importance of giving your business adequate online exposure. In that piece I highlighted how you can use the social media to actualize your marketing objectives. Imagine what you could accomplish with sales and marketing tips that could help you convert more leads, boost sales and market your business online – automatically, that is the objective of this piece.

 

Hopefully, you have established an online presence for your business in the form of a website and/or social media account(s) (e.g. Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, Google + etc.). For instance when someone needs information related to shoes, such an individual would likely search using such words as ; affordable, leather, genuine, Nigerian, black shoes etc. Your understanding of your customer’s needs will help you make out the most appropriate keywords. It is important that you use the right keywords during marketing because this would ensure that your adverts can be found easily by search engines.

It isn’t very productive to market your business just for the purpose of creating a ‘buzz’ and expecting future sales. A small business can’t afford to do that. Get creative, look for unconventional marketing methods your competitors are overlooking. You may discover some highly profitable ways to generate sales and avoid competition. For example, get a graphics designer to create a small banner, title it appropriately and upload on your social media account(s) and/or website, do a short video and place it on youtube then broadcast the link via your various social media account(s), your email and website. Do a short audio jingle and make it available for free download. These unconventional methods can drive a high volume of traffic your way and invariably generate a flood of sales leads and is guaranteed to be worth every kobo spent.

 

Next, set up Joint Promotions with non-competing small businesses serving customers in your market.  Offer to publicize their products or services to your customers in exchange for their publicizing your services to their customers. Cross-promotion usually produces a large number of sales for a very low cost. I believe this is the same reason some artists prefer to feature other artist in their songs, this way they cans leverage on each other’s fans.

A while ago, I worked with a team that designed the online marketing campaign for a power bike accessory store located in Lagos. After the website and various social media accounts were created, we designed a couple of banners that we exchanged on websites of complementary business like a motorcycle training school, a bikers’ club and a Bikers’ magazine.  The result was astonishing, the relationship was symbiotic and everyone benefited from the back-links which helped to increase traffic and ultimately increase sales.

 

Finally, take advantage of your customers. I know this may sound unconventional but I am speaking literally. Your customers already know and trust you. It’s easier to get more business from them than to get any business from somebody who never bought from you. Take advantage of this by creating some special deals just for your existing customers and announce new products and services to them before you announce them to the general public.

 

Let them be the publicity agents for your business. Ask them to share information about your business and promotions on their social media account(s) and websites. Give them an incentive for telling associates and friends about the value of the products or services your business has to offer. An endorsement from them is more effective than any amount of advertising – and it is much cheaper.
